The vacancy rate tells… Baseball popularity is alive!

There are many voices worried about the failure of the most popular sports in Korea, ‘Pro Baseball’. In fact, professional baseball has been in a period of stagnation for a long time due to the COVID-19 epidemic, poor performance at international competitions, and the deviation of baseball players.

But this year, the mood has changed. After spectators were allowed to enter, the number of visitors to the baseball field increased as popular clubs performed well. There are indicators that change as dramatically as the crowd. That is the vacancy rate in the commercial area near the baseball field. When the baseball crowd increases, the nearby commercial area becomes active. The vacancy rate decreases when the commercial district is revived. Therefore, if the vacancy rate in the commercial district decreases, the degree of revival of baseball’s popularity can be estimated.

The growth of the commercial district near the most popular club ‘El Lot Gi’ is remarkable. In the Jamsil Saenae commercial district near Jamsil Baseball Stadium, the home stadium of the LG Twins, the vacancy rate of medium-to-large shopping malls dropped from 11% in the first quarter of last year to 5.8% in the first quarter of this year. The vacancy rate at Sajik Baseball Stadium in Busan, which increased to 13.7% in the fourth quarter of last year, decreased to 8.6% in the first quarter of this year. Busan Sajik Baseball Stadium is the home stadium of the Lotte Giants. In particular, in the case of Busan Sajik Baseball Stadium, the vacancy rate of small shopping malls fell to 0% in the first quarter of 2022. In fact, it means that there is no ‘vacancy’. In the first quarter of 2021 alone, the vacancy rate reached 12.7%. As the popular team, the Lotte Giants, continued to promote, it seems that the commercial area has been revived as the audience continues.
