NEW YORK (dpa-AFX) – US government bond prices rose slightly on Wednesday. The futures contract for ten-year Treasuries (T-Note future) advanced in early trading by 0.02 percent to 128.16 points. In contrast, the yield on ten-year government bonds fell to 1.78 percent. Last week it had reached a two-year high of 1.9 percent in anticipation of tighter monetary policy in the USA.

The Fed is likely to set the course for higher interest rates this Wednesday. Many observers are expecting a clear signal that the central bank interest rate, which is currently at zero, will probably rise as early as March.

Somewhat in the shadow of the Federal Reserve, Canada’s central bank also announces its decisions. Observers consider it quite possible that the Canadians are one step ahead of their large neighboring country and are already starting to raise interest rates. However, a rate hike is not a sure thing. Commerzbank expert Elisabeth Andreae expects the first tightening to take place in March, i.e. at the same time as the Fed.

In addition, the focus in the course of trading is on fresh economic data. On the agenda are new home sales in the US in December. Experts expect only a slight increase compared to the previous month./la/jsl/mis
