Federal government still rates passenger flights over Ukraine as safe

BERLIN (Dow Jones) — According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, the deployment of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine does not currently pose a threat to air traffic at the request of Welt am Sonntag. However, the development of the situation is continuously monitored.

In contrast, US air traffic control had already banned American airlines from overflying certain regions of Ukraine near the Russian border in October, according to the newspaper. France and Great Britain also published warnings.

Meanwhile, the Lufthansa Group continues to fly to destinations in Ukraine, including the capital Kiev. “We are monitoring and assessing the situation very closely and are in contact with the responsible authorities and internal experts,” the newspaper quoted a Lufthansa spokeswoman as saying.
