BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – Representatives of the 30 NATO countries and Russia met in Brussels for talks on the Ukraine conflict and other current issues. At the Wednesday meeting, Russia was expected to primarily promote its demands for new security guarantees. From Moscow’s point of view, these should include, among other things, NATO’s waiver of further expansion to the east and the withdrawal of armed forces from eastern allies. Russia wants to prevent Ukraine from joining the military alliance.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said before the start of the meeting that it was about a “profound conversation” about key issues of European security. In Russia, distrust of the “peace-loving character” of NATO had built up in recent years, he said. However, there is no fixed agenda for the conversation.

Above all, NATO is likely to demand an end to the Russian troop deployment near Ukraine. According to Western intelligence services, this is related to Moscow’s demands and is intended to fuel fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine in order to persuade NATO to make concessions. According to US data, Russia has now drawn around 100,000 soldiers near the Ukraine.
