WISMAR (dpa-AFX) – Two days after the collapse of the MV Werften, the eyes are slowly turning forward. The provisional insolvency administrator appointed by the Schwerin District Court on Wednesday, Christoph Morgen from the Hamburg law firm Brinkmann & Partner, wants to inform around 1900 employees of the shipbuilding companies in Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund about the situation and the next steps at staff meetings this Thursday, as he announced.
First of all, the payment of the outstanding December wages is important. “My team and I have already initiated the pre-financing for insolvency payments,” said Morgen. The implementation will take a few more days. After the meeting, Schwesig assured the locations and employees that they would continue to support politicians, although she also relied on the federal government. “The state government and the federal government want to talk together in a working group about how the federal government can help us with the future of the locations,” said the head of government.
Schwesig defended the commitment of the federal and state governments in the previous development of MV Werften towards building cruise ships. Shipbuilding for cruises had a perspective and has a perspective in the future as people wanted to go cruising again after the pandemic. But there is now this difficult corona pandemic, which has hit the shipyards in MV hard. The bankruptcy is bitter, said Schwesig.
Eight bankruptcy applications were filed for MV Werften on Monday. The parent company Genting got into trouble with its cruise business as a result of the ongoing corona pandemic. Trading in Genting shares on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange has been suspended since last Friday.
On Thursday, the state parliament in Schwerin will deal with the situation of the shipyards in a special session. The parliamentary group of the Left called for the maritime industry in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to be set up more broadly than before. The CDU parliamentary group accused the red-red state government and the new federal government of failing to deal with MV Werften and its parent company Genting Hong Kong.
