MOSCOW (dpa-AFX) – The Kremlin has rejected criticism of new military exercises in areas not far from the Ukrainian border. “We are still talking about our units and our military districts on the territory of our country,” said his spokesman Dmitry Peskov in Moscow on Wednesday, according to the Tass state agency. In connection with important consultations between NATO and Russia, the USA complained that Moscow was not making any efforts to ease the tension.
The first talks in two and a half years began this morning in Brussels. Talks are planned for Thursday in Vienna as part of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). There was already a high-level meeting of representatives from Russia and the USA in Geneva on Monday.
There is no connection between the maneuvers and negotiations with the West, said Peskow. The Ministry of Defense announced on Tuesday that 3,000 soldiers had been transferred to regions on the Ukrainian border for training purposes. In addition, more than 10,000 soldiers began maneuvers at more than 20 training areas in a military district in the south. Some of these training grounds are in areas near Ukraine.
Peskow said: “The military build-up and exercises will continue. This is a common practice of all armed forces.” / Cht / DP / eas
