BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – The federal government is not planning a general ban on the transport of nuclear substances. This would not be practical, said a spokesman for the Ministry of the Environment in Berlin on Wednesday. Nuclear fuel rods would have to be transported in Germany just for final disposal. A ban on the import or export of nuclear substances would, in turn, likely violate European law.

The day before, the Federal Constitutional Act announced that a 2010 ban on nuclear transport by the Bremen state government violated the Basic Law. In the case of the peaceful use of nuclear power, only the federal government is allowed to enact laws, but not a single federal state./hrz/DP/mis
