BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Rising corona numbers are forcing the organizers of the annual “We’re fed up” demonstration in Berlin a second time to plan their protest much smaller than hoped. Instead of an elevator with thousands of participants, there will be a small protest with tractors in the government district on Saturday next week, as a spokesman for the Meine Landwirtschaft campaign said on Monday. “Please stay at home on January 22nd,” said the organization’s website. The demonstration will be postponed.
Initially, a demonstration with a mask and distance was called under 2G conditions, up to 15,000 participants were registered with the assembly authority. However, the number of infections no longer allowed this, it was now said by the organizers. Contacts would have to be reduced in the interests of everyone.
Another action is planned at the Bundestag headquarters and a protest note will be handed over to Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens). The initiators are campaigning for a new start in agricultural policy. They are calling for more commitment against the climate crisis, the extinction of species and against the fact that more and more farmers are giving up their farms. The campaign is carried out by representatives of organic and conventional farmers, nature, environmental and animal welfare associations as well as church aid organizations./bf/DP/jha
