TEL AVIV / RAMALLAH (dpa-AFX) – According to Palestinian figures, the European Union has pledged nine million euros for the development of industrial zones in the Gaza Strip. Of this, two million euros are to go as an incentive to business people who want to invest in the industrial zones, as Prime Minister Mohammed Shtaye’s office in Ramallah said on Thursday. Shtaye announced the agreement with the EU on Wednesday.

The Palestinian Authority under President Mahmud Abbas, based in Ramallah, actually only governs in the West Bank. The Islamist Palestinian organization Hamas rules the Gaza Strip, which has a population of around 2.1 million. According to aid organizations, the people live under very poor conditions such as power outages that last for hours. Israel, the EU and the US classify Hamas as a terrorist organization./mak/sar/jak/DP/mis
