Baerbock pushes for a ban on imports of products from forced labor

BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Federal Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock is pushing for an EU import ban on products made with forced labor. A corresponding ban on European companies must also apply to foreign companies that want to sell products on the European market, said the Green politician of the German Press Agency. “And so the European Parliament’s proposal to ban the import of goods made with forced labor is, in my opinion, exactly right.”

The European Parliament had already spoken in March for an import ban on products made by slave labor. In September, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen endorsed this proposal.

Such an import ban could affect products from the Chinese region of Xinjiang. The Chinese leadership is accused of using Muslim Uyghurs there as slave labor. China rejects the allegations as “lies”. In the United States, President Joe Biden had already enacted a law to restrict imports of products from Xinjiang shortly before Christmas./mfi/bk/DP/stk
