US government assures allies of transparency in dialogue with Moscow

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – The US government has assured its allies in Europe of transparency and solidarity with a view to the planned dialogue with Russia in January. With the talks one wants to achieve “common goals”, said the spokesman for the US State Department, Ned Price, on Tuesday. The principle with regard to the allies is: “Nothing about them without them.”

The exchange with Russia as part of the strategic security dialogue is a bilateral format, Price said. In the past, the allies were “always fully and thoroughly informed”. There was agreement on a “principled diplomacy” with Russia.

Representatives of the USA and Russia plan to speak in Geneva on January 10th about the Ukraine conflict and the security guarantees demanded by NATO for Moscow. “The Russians know very well that the proposals contain some things that will be unacceptable to the United States and our European allies and partners,” said Price, referring to the security guarantees required. He assumes, however, that an open dialogue and open diplomacy could be constructive in order to de-escalate in the Ukraine conflict./nau/DP/he
