US airlines cancel hundreds of flights over Christmas because of Omikron

WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – Large US airlines have canceled hundreds of flights over the Christmas weekend because of the Omikron variant and thus thwarted many people’s holiday plans. There were thousands of flight cancellations worldwide – especially the USA were affected. According to CNN, the cancellations on Christmas Eve and the two Christmas holidays affected around 1700 flights within, to or from the USA. CNN relies on the flight data website Flight Aware. In the USA, the Omikron variant is now dominant – the number of corona cases has recently skyrocketed. In many places, records were broken for the new infections reported daily.

On Saturday alone, the US airline Delta (Delta Air Lines) canceled almost 370 flights and justified this not only with Omikron but also with winter weather in parts of the USA. More than 300 flights should be canceled again on Sunday. “The nationwide accumulation of Omikron cases this week has had a direct impact on our flight crews and the employees who run our operations,” said United airline. The airline announced that it would “notify the affected customers before they come to the airport” ./ nau / DP / he
