BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – The federal government has achieved its target of 30 million vaccinations set in mid-November by the end of the year. The mark was exceeded on Sunday, as Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach told the German Press Agency. “We have now reached an important interim goal. We can all be proud of that.” One year after the official start of the vaccination campaign against the coronavirus on December 27, 2020, a total of almost 147 million doses have been administered in Germany.

Lauterbach thanked the vaccinating doctors, but also those who had been vaccinated. “You have done yourself and society a great service.” He appealed to everyone to move on at a high pace now. “We’re going into the second round. Our goal is to continue the booster campaign over the next few weeks at such a high speed that we can significantly reduce the number of hospital admissions for the Omikron variant.” The booster campaign running in Germany is probably the most offensive in all of Europe. “We will continue it by all means.”

Chancellor Olaf Scholz first formulated the 30 million target on November 18 after a conference with the Prime Ministers of the federal states, but at that time it was still based exclusively on booster vaccinations. On that day, counting for the target began. In his government statement on December 15, Scholz then said: “I want all of us in Germany to get 30 million doses of vaccine in our upper arms by the end of the year, as a first vaccination, as a second vaccination and as a booster vaccination.” After the Prime Minister’s Conference on December 21, the Chancellor corrected the target date to Christmas.

According to the Robert Koch Institute’s vaccination dashboard, 21.7 million people in Germany are currently still unvaccinated (26.2 percent of the population). Of these, 4 million are aged 0 to 4 years (4.8 percent of the population), for whom vaccines are not yet available.

On the RKI dashboard it is pointed out that the vaccination rates are to be understood as minimum vaccination rates, “since 100% coverage cannot be achieved by the reporting system”. The Robert Koch Institute assumes that the actual vaccination rate is up to five percentage points higher.

Germany has received a total of 159.9 million doses of vaccine so far (as of December 19). Biontech’s vaccine accounted for 116.3 million doses of this / Pfizer, 23.9 million to Moderna’s .14.4 million on Astrazeneca’s vaccine (AstraZeneca share) and 5.2 million on Johnson & Johnson./mfi/seb/DP/he
