BERLIN / DÜSSELDORF (dpa-AFX) – In the fight against the further spread of the corona virus, the federal states are tightening their measures at the end of the year. Contacts in private and public life are being further restricted, especially in order to arm against the highly contagious Omikron variant. Some federal states had already started this at Christmas, others will follow suit on Monday and Tuesday. The vaccination campaign continues unchecked between the holidays. On Sunday, the federal government achieved its target set in mid-November of 30 million vaccinations by the end of the year. By the end of January, 80 percent of people in Germany should be vaccinated at least once.

The official corona numbers continued to decline. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the nationwide seven-day incidence on Sunday was 220.7. For comparison: the previous day the value was 242.9, a week ago it was 315.4. However, due to the holiday, the figures can only be used to a limited extent. Experts fear an imminent trend reversal because of Omikron, the variant has now been proven in all federal states.

To cushion the Omikron wave, stricter rules apply from Monday in Baden-Württemberg, Lower Saxony, Brandenburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Other countries will follow on Tuesday, then discotheques across Germany will remain closed and major national events will take place in front of empty stands. The federal and state governments agreed on the measures last week.

Bavaria’s Minister of Health, Klaus Holetschek, proposed not only to impose fines in the event of a breach of the general vaccination requirement, but also to consider financial disadvantages in terms of health insurance. “We should also check whether malus regulations in the field of statutory health insurance would be possible and sensible,” said the CSU politician to the editorial network in Germany.

According to a report by the “tageszeitung” (Monday), the police are now investigating thousands of cases nationwide because of forged vaccination passports. In Bavaria alone there have been 3070 cases since the beginning of the year, at the beginning of September there were only 110 such cases. In North Rhine-Westphalia 2495 cases have been counted, almost half of them since the end of November. In Berlin there are 1028 cases, even in the poorly populated Schleswig-Holstein there are 550 cases – two thirds of these have occurred in the last four weeks./seb/mfi/beg/dot/DP/he
