Interim target of 30 million vaccinations achieved by the end of the year

In mid-November, the federal government set the interim target of 30 million more corona vaccinations by the end of the year – the mark has now been exceeded. Another important vaccination goal, however, has been postponed.

The federal government has achieved its target of 30 million vaccinations set in mid-November by the end of the year. The mark was exceeded on Boxing Day, as Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach told the dpa news agency.

“The booster campaign in Germany is in full swing,” said the SPD politician. “We have now reached an important interim goal. We can all be proud of that.” Lauterbach thanked everyone who contributed – especially the doctors, but also those who had been vaccinated. “You have done yourself and society a great service.”

80 percent target postponed

The federal government, however, has to postpone another vaccination target: Originally January 7th was mentioned as the date by which the first vaccinations should have reached a rate of 80 percent. The next federal-state meeting on the corona situation is also expected to take place on this day. Instead, the government wants to reach the 80 percent quota by the end of January if possible, as a government spokeswoman said ARD capital studio said.

Currently, almost 74 percent of the total population in Germany has been vaccinated against the coronavirus at least once. For the goal of 80 percent, around five million more people would have to receive an initial vaccination.

In many large cities, vaccination centers are closed on public holidays, as are many medical practices. Although there are special vaccination campaigns on Christmas and New Year’s Eve, the vaccination rate has already decreased significantly. According to the Robert Koch Institute, around 67,000 vaccinations were administered on Christmas Eve, including 51,000 so-called booster vaccinations to refresh the vaccination protection. On Wednesday, the number of vaccine doses administered was 710,000 – including 561,000 booster vaccinations.

Advice on general compulsory vaccination in January

In order to achieve a higher vaccination rate, politicians are also discussing a general vaccination requirement. It should come on the agenda in Parliament in the first week of session in the new year. There will be a first debate on mandatory vaccinations in the Bundestag at the beginning of January, said SPD parliamentary deputy Dirk Wiese of “Bild am Sonntag”. A number of “not easy questions in detail” arose for a legally secure regulation. This applies in particular to the question of when someone legally loses his vaccination status and a refresher is necessary.
