BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – The President of the Federal Cartel Office, Andreas Mundt, is calling for a larger budget and more staff for his authority. “In the long term we cannot cope with our tasks with the existing capacities,” said Mundt of the “Süddeutsche Zeitung” (Monday). “We are often faced with powerful companies with unlimited resources.”
The Bonn authority recently got new and important competencies to take action against anti-competitive practices by large digital corporations. Seven new proceedings were opened this year alone. “An increase would be extremely helpful, especially if consumer protection were added,” he said. According to plans by the new federal government, the cartel office is to be given additional tasks and strengthened in the area of consumer protection.
Mundt said he was reluctant to ask for more staff through the newspaper. “But we have to be able to conduct these very complex proceedings in a reasonable time and bring them to a legally binding conclusion. That presupposes that we have enough staff,” said Mundt.
Furthermore, the head of the Cartel Office is concerned about competition in the energy markets. “The path to the energy turnaround is ambitious. This could lead to bottlenecks, for example in electricity, from which nobody should benefit insubordinately and abuse their position,” he said. Competition is very important for the energy market and sustainability. The number of market participants is currently decreasing, for example because nuclear power plants are now being switched off or coal will be phased out ./red/DP/he
