MADRID (dpa-AFX) – Spain wants to combat the spread of the Omikron variant of the coronavirus with relatively mild measures such as more vaccinations, more medical staff and a mask requirement, even outdoors. The government announced on Wednesday after a video crisis meeting between Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the regional heads of government, as reported by the state TV broadcaster RTVE. Many today already voluntarily wear masks outdoors.
Catalonia could not prevail with the demand for stricter restrictions nationwide. The region with the tourist metropolis of Barcelona announced on Tuesday, among other things, the closure of clubs, bars and discos as well as restrictions on going out from 1:00 a.m. to 6:00 a.m. and limiting the occupancy of restaurants, cultural and leisure facilities. These measures are to come into force on Friday for an initial 15 days.
In Spain, the number of new infections has recently skyrocketed again. The seven-day incidence on Tuesday was 424, which is higher than in Germany. However, because of the high vaccination rate of more than 80 percent, many sick people show no or only mild symptoms. The situation in the intensive care units is more relaxed compared to Germany./ro/DP/he
