EU wants to be involved in security talks with Russia

BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – The European Union’s foreign representative, Josep Borrell, calls for the EU to have a say in talks with Russia about security in Europe. In such a discussion, the concerns of all those involved must be taken into account, wrote the EU chief diplomat on Wednesday evening. The EU will work with the US and NATO to ensure that their interests are represented.

The background to this is tensions between NATO and Russia due to the situation on the Ukrainian-Russian border. “Europe’s security is threatened,” warned Borrell. Russia had recently handed over a draft agreement on binding security guarantees to NATO, the USA and their allies. Moscow calls for an end to NATO’s eastward expansion, which it sees itself threatened by. In addition, Moscow wants to ensure that NATO does not accept Ukraine./mjm/DP/nas
