BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – The Christmas travel wave is rolling in train traffic. Deutsche Bahn expects a particularly large number of travelers this Thursday and the Monday after the holidays. According to a spokesman, the booking numbers are higher than last year, but still 35 to 40 percent below the pre-Corona level.
From Wednesday until January 2nd, Deutsche Bahn has been using special trains on connections that are in high demand. These include the connections between Berlin and Stuttgart or Munich and between Cologne, Düsseldorf and Berlin.
The capacity of the railway is constantly growing because it will gradually receive new ICE4 trains by 2025. Since the timetable change on December 12th, 50,000 more seats have been offered than a year ago. In 2020, Christmas long-distance traffic had a good 500,000 seats a day.
Passengers must prove that they have been vaccinated against Covid-19, have recovered from it or have been tested for the coronavirus. Children up to six years of age are exempt from this. For older pupils, this only applies during school time./bf/DP/nas
