The Robert Koch Institute reports 50,968 new corona infections within 24 hours. That’s 10,320 fewer cases than on Friday a week ago when 61,288 positive tests were reported. The nationwide seven-day incidence continues to fall to 331.8 from 340.1 the previous day. The value indicates how many people per 100,000 inhabitants have been infected with the corona virus in the past seven days. 437 other people died related to the virus. This increases the number of reported deaths within one day to 107,639. In total, more than 6.72 million corona infections have been reported in Germany so far.
G7 states see the Omicron variant as “the greatest current threat to health”
The health ministers of the G7 countries see the Omikron variant of the coronavirus as the “greatest current threat to global public health”. It is therefore “more important than ever to work closely together,” it said in a statement. The G7 ministers were “deeply concerned about the increase in cases” and called for an intensive exchange of data.
The G7 health ministers at their meeting under the auspices of the UK agreed to focus on the booster vaccinations as well as regular testing to contain the virus. Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden warned of a “very rapid” spread of the Omicron variant in the US and urged citizens to get vaccinated or boosted. “The only real protection is to be vaccinated,” he said, prophesying “a winter of serious illness and death” for the unvaccinated.
