Berlin The new Federal Minister for Family Affairs, Anne Spiegel (Greens), has described the introduction of basic child benefits as one of the most important tasks of the traffic light coalition. “We want to ensure that all children have good opportunities – regardless of their parents’ budget,” said Spiegel to the Handelsblatt. “If young people grow up in poverty, they often lack opportunities and prospects in their further life.” With the basic child security, the financial support of families is improved.

“So far there has been a jungle of family benefits with around 150 measures,” said Spiegel. “In future, an application for the birth of the child should be sufficient to provide unbureaucratic support to families with low incomes.” Spiegel announced that the working group agreed in the coalition agreement, headed by the Federal Ministry of Family Affairs, will be set up at the beginning of next year to initiate basic child benefits . “She has to solve difficult questions at the numerous interfaces of the different services,” said Spiegel. “That will certainly take some time.”
