STRASBURG (dpa-AFX) – In view of the deployment of Russian troops near Ukraine, the EU Parliament has asked the member states to be able to react very quickly. According to a resolution passed by the EU Parliament on Thursday with a large majority, the Council of Member States must be constantly informed by the EU Commission about Russia’s military measures. The EU must stand ready to quickly impose sanctions in the face of the threat instead of waiting for Russia to invade Ukraine. However, Parliament did not expressly call for immediate action.

In the case of new sanctions, the EU Parliament names a whole range of measures to be taken in the legally non-binding paper. High-ranking Russian military personnel, who are involved in the planning of a possible invasion, as well as the inner circle of oligarchs in the vicinity of Russian President Vladimir Putin should be brought into focus. In addition, bank accounts in the EU should be blocked and travel bans should be imposed. According to the MPs, Russia should also be excluded from the Swift international payment system.

In addition, Parliament demands that the EU reduce its dependence on Russian energy. The controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline, which is supposed to transport Russian gas to Germany, should not be allowed to go into operation, regardless of whether the requirements of the EU gas directive are met in the long term or not.
