BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – European airport operators and airlines are calling for the travel restrictions introduced in view of the Omikron variant to be lifted. Governments in Europe should focus on stepping up measures that directly restrict local transmissions, the airport association ACI Europe and the European airline association A4E said on Thursday evening. Accordingly, large public or private gatherings should be regulated, more masks should be worn and social contacts should be limited.

The omicron variant is spreading quickly. According to the EU health authority ECDC, it should dominate as early as January or February. Italy is therefore already demanding a negative corona test from all travelers – including those who have been vaccinated – from other EU countries. Ireland and Greece have also introduced new testing requirements. / Mjm / DP / men
