High energy prices: Belgian energy provider files for bankruptcy

BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) – The Flemish energy provider Vlaamse Energieleverancier has filed for bankruptcy. The company announced this on its website. According to the Belga news agency, the second Belgian energy supplier had to give up because of the high electricity and gas prices. Two insolvency administrators have been appointed. According to Belga, Energy2Business went bankrupt in September.

According to a report by the broadcaster VRT, Vlaamse Energieleverancier supplies around 70,000 households in Flanders with green electricity and gas, but does not produce any energy itself. According to this, the provider was unable to pass the increased energy costs on to consumers. In Belgium, wholesale prices for energy have more than tripled in recent months, according to Belga. The rapidly increasing prices have also led to bankruptcies in other European countries – including Germany./dub/DP/nas
