WHO: Avoid further corona waves through caution

GENEVA (dpa-AFX) – In order to avoid further corona waves, from the point of view of the World Health Organization (WHO) it is crucial that precautionary measures are only slowly lifted. “If you lift all measures at once, the virus will resurgence,” said WHO expert Maria van Kerkhove in Geneva on Wednesday. Instead of lockdowns, the hygiene rules propagated from the start, such as hand washing, wearing masks and a certain social distance, are important. Despite the currently high number of corona cases among children and adolescents, the WHO spoke out against the hasty closure of schools. “Schools should be the last to close and the first to open again,” said WHO scientist Soumya Swaminathan.

Many states still stagnated at a vaccination rate of 50 to 60 percent, criticized the WHO. “We really need to make progress here,” said Swaminathan. It is about knowing exactly who has not been vaccinated and for what reasons, said WHO crisis coordinator Mike Ryan. “We have to move away from the raw percentages and towards those that have not yet been achieved.”

WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus pointed out that 60 percent of all new corona infections are currently recorded in Europe. However, this does not mean the all-clear for other continents. “No country and no region is out of the woods,” said Tedros. According to the WHO, 257 million corona infections have now been registered worldwide, 5.16 million people have died from or with corona./mrd/DP/he
