BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – In view of the worsening corona situation, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has once again urged people to be vaccinated against the virus. You have the means at hand to protect yourself from a serious, possibly fatal course of the disease, he said on Wednesday in a speech at the digital German Seniors’ Day. “But too few have made use of it so far.” Obviously with a view to the debate about compulsory vaccination, Steinmeier added: “If all offers, requests, appeals and appeals do not help, then nobody should accuse politicians for taking more stringent measures. It cannot stay as it is.”

The situation in Germany is worsening dramatically, said Steinmeier. The number of people who become infected is rising to new heights. In some regions of the country “the situation got out of hand”. More and more people have to struggle for their lives in intensive care units. Germany will probably have more than 100,000 victims of the pandemic this week. “That is an incredible number, a number that we would certainly not have thought possible two years ago.” However, it is about more: “It is a human catastrophe.”

Steinmeier appealed to everyone who does not yet have the protection of a vaccination: “Get vaccinated and get it as soon as possible. It’s about your health and the health of your fellow human beings. It’s about the future of our country.” He also addressed this urgent request to everyone who worked in nursing and healthcare.
