WARSAW (dpa-AFX) – Poland is not planning any general vaccination against the corona virus for the time being. This solution is not planned at the moment, said vaccination officer Michael Dworczyk on Wednesday. “Neither regulations nor campaigns help because everyone in Poland knows about the vaccinations (…) There is also a strong polarization in society and strong emotions on both sides of the barricades.”

The opposition accuses the national-conservative PiS government of remaining inactive in view of a comparatively low vaccination rate and rising new infections, in order not to alienate those who oppose the vaccination among their voters. In Poland, 20.3 million out of almost 38 million inhabitants are fully vaccinated. Statistics show that vaccination rates are particularly low in the east and south-east of the country – where the PiS enjoys the highest voter approval.

Apart from a general mask requirement indoors, on buses and trains, there are practically no restrictions in Germany’s neighboring country, not even for those who have not been vaccinated. The government and opposition are currently negotiating a new law that will allow employers to check the vaccination status of their employees.
