In the event of a disaster: The basis for a warning via mobile communications is in place
BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – In the event of a disaster, the population should in future also be warned via mobile radio – the basis for this cell broadcast system is now in place. The Federal Ministry of Economics published a mobile radio warning regulation on Wednesday. This means that public warnings of disasters and emergencies could soon also be sent over the cellular networks using cell broadcast, as the ministry announced on request. First the newspapers of the Funke media group reported about it.
After the flood disaster in July, especially in western Germany, the federal and state governments decided to introduce cell broadcast. According to the ministry, the system enables warnings to be sent quickly and precisely to a large number of people using a push message on cell phones.
The regulation specifies the corresponding legal obligations of the mobile network operators and service providers and shapes them, it said. They regulate the basic technical requirements as well as the organizational framework for sending out the warnings.
According to the ministry, the approval of the Federal Council is required for the regulation. The Federal Council will deal with the regulation this Friday. At the same time, the Federal Network Agency is developing a guideline that defines detailed technical regulations./hoe/DP/mis
