Düsseldorf Are you a man? Then imagine someone tipping you to change their hairstyle or voice to get ahead at the job. Strange isn’t it? Are you a woman? Then you may already know such “advice”.

For example, a couple of companions at dinner actually suggested to top manager Britta Bomhard that they should grow a page head in order to come across as more feminine. The lawyer Marion Welp, on the other hand, advised business coaches in a seminar the diametrical opposite: copy men, sit down with their legs apart, voice down. “Yes, what now?” You want – and especially women – to ask out loud.

The share of women on Dax boards is currently 18.2 percent. Even if female new recruits at top level have recently increased disproportionately, Germany is still lagging behind internationally. Small ascents are often prevented or made more difficult – through pointed comments, contradicting announcements or supposedly well-intentioned tips, as in the cases described.
