PRAGUE (dpa-AFX) – Despite the high corona numbers, the Czech Republic, in contrast to neighboring Austria, wants to forego a nationwide lockdown for the time being. “The Czech Republic will not follow Austria’s example – under no circumstances,” said Executive Prime Minister Andrej Babis in Prague on Friday. His designated successor, the liberal-conservative election winner Petr Fiala, had previously spoken out against widespread closings.

From Monday on, the 2G rule will apply in many areas such as restaurants and hotels. So only those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered have access. The cabinet also decided on Friday to expand the nationwide mass tests. All pupils, with the exception of those who have been vaccinated, will in future have to take a weekly antigen test. Unvaccinated people also have to be tested weekly in companies. Around a third of the companies already do this voluntarily.

According to current figures, there were 847 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the Czech Republic within seven days. The eastern parts of the country are hardest hit. The outgoing Prime Minister Babis addressed the people with an emotional message: “You should finally understand that there is vaccination to prevent the hospitals from being overburdened and people from dying.” Only 6.2 million of the 10.7 million inhabitants of the EU member state are fully protected. / Hei / DP / ngu
