“Gorch Fock” starts training trip: joy at the port of Kiel
The German Navy, regular crew and relatives have been waiting for this moment for almost six years – the joy and pride were correspondingly great when the German Navy training ship cast off from the “Gorch Fock” mole. Many relatives were at the pier to say goodbye to loved ones. Only the regular crew was on board. Cadets aren’t there yet. There was also no band that usually played when the ship went on a journey. Since the original date had to be postponed by a week, no Bundeswehr band had time for it.
First Lisbon, then Canary Islands
The “Gorch Fock” will make a stopover in the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. After a long break from sailing, the regular crew will then train off the Canary Islands under favorable weather conditions. At the beginning of 2022, a total of around 220 officer candidates will learn the nautical skills in two training stages on the ship. At the beginning of spring, the three-masted barque should return to its home port in Kiel.
No sails set
No sails were set on Friday morning. According to Commander Nils Brandt, this was due to the wind conditions. “Unfortunately that doesn’t fit. You might have been able to cast off, but then we would have had to recover the sails again and I won’t do that to my crew. But maybe we will be able to set the sails on Sunday and then turn off the engine.”
Originally, the three-master’s first long voyage after a long stay in the shipyard was supposed to begin in the middle of last week. This was delayed by germs in the drinking water system. The problem on the Bundeswehr training ship has now been resolved. Nils Brandt is the commander of the “Gorch Fock”. For him it will be the last voyage on the ship in eight years.
