ATHENS (dpa-AFX) – To relieve overtired hospital doctors in the corona pandemic, the Greek Ministry of Health committed 85 private doctors on Friday. The relevant documents were handed over by the police to the doctors, who now have to appear in the hospitals on Saturday morning, reported the state radio. The government in Athens had taken a decision the day before that made this step possible. Lawyers said those who refuse could face up to three years in prison.

Because of the fourth wave of corona pandemic, the hospitals, especially in northern Greece, have been completely overcrowded for weeks. The government in Athens had already called on private doctors to volunteer for service at the beginning of November. But only around 40 doctors reported. According to the associations of hospital doctors, the Greek health system needs at least 150 additional colleagues./tt/DP/ngu
