ROUNDUP 2 / Plan: Lockdown for unvaccinated people in Upper Austria from Monday
(new: no lockdown for unvaccinated people in Salzburg)
LINZ (dpa-AFX) – Upper Austria will be the first federal state in Austria to introduce a regional lockdown for unvaccinated people from Monday. This was announced by Prime Minister Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) on Thursday. “The situation is dramatic, which is why we prefer the fifth stage of the federal government’s step-by-step plan and plan a lockdown for unvaccinated people from Monday, provided that the federal government has given the legal green light or the federal government creates the legal basis.” At the same time, preparations were under way to set up emergency quarters with hospital beds, as in 2020.
Upper Austria has a seven-day incidence per 100,000 inhabitants of almost 1,200, which is well above the national average. The vaccination rate is one of the lowest in Austria. The third largest state with 1.5 million inhabitants is governed by a coalition of the ÖVP and the vaccination-critical FPÖ.
In the state of Salzburg, where the incidence is over 1,100, there will be no lockdown for those who have not been vaccinated, Prime Minister Wilfried Haslauer announced on Thursday evening. At the same time, Haslauer spoke of an expansion of the 2G rule – a sign that further restrictions on unvaccinated people are coming in Salzburg. In addition, Haslauer relies on restrictions in gastronomy and a stricter mask requirement.
Talks between the Ministry of Health, Salzburg and Upper Austria took place on Thursday. The details of the new measures are to be presented around noon on Friday.
Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg had previously put stricter measures in the room. A lockdown for the unvaccinated is approaching. “It is already clear that this winter and Christmas will be uncomfortable for the unvaccinated,” said Schallenberg in Bregenz. In view of the dynamics of the fourth corona wave, it may only be a matter of a few days before unvaccinated people have to live with massive exit restrictions, said the head of government. He called the vaccination rate of around 65 percent “embarrassingly low” and again called on the Austrians to get a protective sting immediately.
Meanwhile, the number of new corona infections in Austria has risen again to a record level. According to the authorities, 11,975 cases were recorded within 24 hours. Taking into account the number of inhabitants, that would mean around 100,000 cases in Germany. The seven-day incidence per 100,000 population climbed to 751, three times the German figure. The situation in the clinics continued to worsen. Doctors and nurses are now sounding the alarm louder and louder.
The opposition SPÖ demanded the immediate release of a third vaccination sting after four months in order to break the corona wave. The government’s crisis management is a disaster, said SPÖ leader Pamela Rendi-Wagner.
An attempt by Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) to enforce a regional lockdown for unvaccinated people in Upper Austria and also in Salzburg initially failed on Wednesday evening due to the resistance of the respective state chiefs ./mrd/al/DP/he
