Biden on Virginia gubernatorial election: ‘we will win’
Joe Biden mit Barack Obama
WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) – US President Joe Biden believes in a victory for Democrat Terry McAuliffe in the gubernatorial election in the state of Virginia. “We will win. I think we will win in Virginia,” said Biden on Tuesday at his closing press conference at the world climate summit in Glasgow. But he is assuming that it will be a close race. “We all knew that from the start,” continued Biden.
The gubernatorial election in Virginia around the year before the congressional elections in the USA is also considered an important test of sentiment at the national level and a kind of referendum on Biden’s politics. The citizens of the state are called on this Tuesday to cast their votes. Polls predicted a neck-and-neck race between Democrat McAuliffe and Republican Glenn Youngkin. In the US presidential election a year ago in Virginia, Biden won by a ten-point lead over then-President Donald Trump.
Biden supports the Democrat McAuliffe, Trump the Republican Youngkin. Now it is all about voter turnout, said Biden. However, he does not assume that his performance as president will have an impact on the election result. “I also haven’t seen any evidence that whether I’m doing well or badly, whether or not I’ve got my agenda through, will have any real impact on winning or losing,” he said./nau/DP/he
