Despite a ban, Ukraine has used a combat drone for the first time in the east of the country. The aim was to stop the heavy shelling from the pro-Russian separatists, it said.

It is a new level of escalation in the conflict in Eastern Ukraine: for the first time, the Ukrainian army has deployed a Turkish Bayraktar combat drone – despite a ban that the conflicting parties agreed on in 2014. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry released footage of the attack, which it said had destroyed a large-caliber gun. It is unclear whether there were also victims in the attack.

Stop shelling of the separatists
The aim was to stop the separatists’ shelling on army positions in the Hranitne area, in which one soldier was killed and another injured, the Ukrainian armed forces said.
Local residents reported heavy artillery fire on Ukrainian television. Ten houses were damaged. The power went out.
Maryna Nebera is the secretary of the school in Hranitne, she reported: “The first shelling started at ten o’clock in the evening. It didn’t stop all night. Windows and doors shook. Half of the school staff didn’t show up for fear out of fear. And now the shooting is going on again. My God, it’s terrible. “
Destroyed houses, many buildings without electricity
For its part, Russian television showed pictures of destroyed houses on the territory of the self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Luhansk and Donetsk. A substation was hit, a pumping station was shot at.
The deputy commander of the militia of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, Eduard Basurin, said: “There is damage to social facilities. Schools, hospitals and kindergartens are without electricity. Dwellings and industrial plants have been damaged.”
Recapture territories? Kiev denies
The Ukrainian army, it was said, was trying to recapture territories. Kiev, however, denies this. The war in eastern Ukraine – at least the unanimous warnings against it – threatens to break out again in full. It is high time for the mediators to do more than just appeal to the parties to the conflict to abide by the Minsk Treaty, which should have led to peace in the region long ago.
Fighting has been going on in eastern Ukraine since 2014. According to UN estimates, more than 13,000 people have already been killed in the conflict.
