LONDON (dpa-AFX) – A committee of the British Parliament has issued Great Britain’s corona test program with a damning testimony. “Staggering sums of taxpayers’ money were made available to the national testing and contact tracing system in the midst of a global health and economic crisis,” said committee chair Meg Hillier, according to a report released on Wednesday. “It had great ambitions, but failed to achieve them despite the large sums invested.”

Just a few months after the outbreak of the pandemic, there were massive problems in the British test system. For example, people who wanted or had to take a test had to travel long distances at times in order to even reach a test center with capacities. Even when evaluating the tests, there were repeated problems and mishaps over the duration of the pandemic. Expensive contracts with external service providers were also criticized.

The tests should have helped citizens return to a more normal life. However, it is not apparent that the program has made a significant contribution to reducing the spread of the virus, according to the report. In the past two years, 37 billion pounds (almost 44 billion euros) have flowed into the system – according to the report, this corresponds to one fifth of the entire budget of the health service./swe/DP/jha
